FINZEAN, The Fair Place, Celebrating 400 years
by Angus Farquharson

“High up in the Grampian hills, a lovely little river winds gently down through heather covered moors.   It passes by an ancient pine wood recognised today as one of the last remnants of the Old Caledonian Forest.   On the river bank stand two working watermills, as if time has stood still for 150 years.   Suddenly, the wooded valley opens out to reveal a very different scene of small hamlets, interspersed with well-tended agricultural land.   All this richly diverse area is aptly called “Finzean”, meaning in Gaelic “the fair place”, for it is very beautiful and has been the home of the Farquharson family for four hundred years  …  All this presents a pleasing picture, little altered since the time of the twelfth Laird, Joseph Farquharson R.A., who loved this place, and made it known in artistic circles all over the world.   He was a master at painting atmosphere and mood.   The changing lights of all that surrounded him became the inspiration, from which he never tired.
