We had a late Spring this year, about three weeks later than normal with winds from the east and chilly temperatures, meaning the grass was slow to grow, but we're happy that all our Spring barley is now in the ground! Our Autumn calves are finally out and they'll be grazing on the fields all around the Farm Shop this week, marking the end of their seven-month winter feeding period. They love the smell of fresh grass and have been very eager to get outside; it’s great to see them relishing their time outdoors! As for our Spring cattle, they are still indoors for a little longer, with only five cows left to calve. We have a new young Aberdeen Angus bull, Lindertis Jagger. He joined us in early April and is settling in happily with his twelve heifers. We’ve just sold the last of our yearling cattle at Huntly and the prices remain buoyant. The birdlife is springing into action and there is a veritable dawn chorus in the mornings. Our oyster catchers are back and have nested in one of the huge urns in front of Finzean House. We would urge everyone however to keep dogs under control during the nesting season as one dog routing under the hedgerows can do untold damage simply by raking past a ground nest.
